Discipline and Blessing

May 7 | Psalm 139:4-6

“For before a word is is on my tongue behold, Oh Lord, You know all of it. You hem me in behind them before, and lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is too high. I cannot comprehend it.” (Psalm 139:4–6)

We have different levels of knowledge. We know people as friends, acquaintances, aware of them, or total strangers. I have close family and friends who know me the most, acquaintances who know certain areas of me, facts about people from a distance, and total strangers I don’t know at all.

But God has knowledge of you and me unmatched even by close family and friends. He knows what I’m going to say before I say it. He knows what I’m going to do before I do it. I can keep others out of my thoughts, but God knows them.

He is sovereign over the universe, and yet he has given us free will to make our own decisions. And he honors our decisions. He doesn’t override them. There are so many things I don’t know about him, that I must learn through intimate relationship.

God protects you from the dangers. He hems you in. Perhaps he keeps you from the things you want to do. He lays his hand on you, sometimes for discipline and blessing. It depends on what you need at the time. Do you enjoy his blessing but resent his discipline?

Action Step: Do you thank the Lord for his close knowledge of you? Or do you see him as an intruder? He uses his knowledge for your benefit. Accept his discipline and blessing, for it is all for your benefit.

Heavenly Father, thank you that you watch over me. I appreciate that you know my thoughts, for you can keep me on the path that honors and glorifies you. I want to please you even in my thought life. No one else can know and guide me so perfectly.
