Lukewarm

June 26 | Revelation 3:20

“Behold, I am standing at the door and I am knocking. I f anyone might hear My voice and might open the door, I will enter into him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20)

No one wants lukewarm water on a hot day. Hot water has its uses from cooking to bathing. Cold water is great for drinking. Lukewarm water has no application.

This last church in Laodicea has the most references to its city and location. Everything Jesus says to this church is the opposite of what they thought of themselves. They think they’re rich, prosperous, and need nothing.

But Jesus tells them to buy gold from him in a city that struck its own coins. He tells them to get white robes when they made their own special black wool. And he told them to get eye salve from him so they would not be blind, one of their chief exports.

Everything they thought they had they lacked. Jesus is hard on you when you need him to be. His discipline keeps you from falling away from him. You must make an honest evaluation of your relationship with Jesus. Don’t think too highly of yourself.

It is better to be poor in spirit than to think you have everything you need. Always desire more of Jesus and his Spirit. Jesus stood at the door and knocked because he was not in the church. They thought they had everything, but they lacked Jesus.

Action Step: Evaluate your life with Christ regularly. Approach him poor in spirit, seeking more of him. Be on fire in your devotion to Jesus.

Precious Jesus, I long for more of you. Without you I am nothing, wretched and poor. Give me passion for you. I want to grow closer to you. Give me years to hear from your Spirit and put into practice everything you teach me.
