Chaos to Order

September 23 | Genesis 1:2

Daily Bread

Now it happened that the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the face of the primeval flood waters, but God’s Spirit was hovering over the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)

Many of us live chaotic lives, rushing from one event to another, prioritizing and reprioritizing our task lists. We have lost the art of a peaceful lifestyle. We’ve filled our lives with so many extra things that foundational things are losing their place.

God was creating the universe and the earth. In the midst of His creation chaos ruled the waters. The Holy Spirit hovered over them. His presence brought order to chaos. The chaotic waters became peaceful.

Some describe “hover” as a nurturing effect. The Spirit brought God’s order when order was needed. But it didn’t just stop there. He ordered all of creation from then on. And He is still bringing order to chaos today.

The Holy Spirit brings peace to your life. He can order your steps, your priorities, and your schedule. He nurtures your life, your relationship with Jesus. But you must focus on His voice, hear His instruction, and obey Him. When you continue in your chaos, you cannot hear the Spirit’s voice. Busyness is the enemy of peace. You must slow down and find His stillness.

Action Step: Make a place in your schedule for quiet time with the Spirit. Let Him order your steps in the silence. Be still and know that He is God.

Holy Spirit, order my steps in the stillness. Fill the silence with Your presence and Your voice. Give me Your peace in the middle of my chaos. I have cleared my schedule to meet with You.
