The Wrong Voices

June 17 | Genesis 16:2-3

“And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold, the Lord has made me barren. Go in to my female slave. It may be that I shall obtain children through her. And Abram listened to Sarai’s voice. So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her female slave, after he lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.” (Genesis 16:2–3)

We can listen to many perspectives and voices in our world. Counsel comes from all walks of life. The people we listen to can change the course of our entire life. We must listen to God’s voice first.

Abraham was promised a son in his old age by God. And yet when Sarah had an idea of fulfilling God’s promise a Different Way, Abraham listened to her instead of God. She wanted Abraham to get an heir through her maidservant instead of her.

Abraham turned to human means to fulfill God’s promise. He listened to the wrong voice, as much as Sarah’s goal may have been to fulfill God’s promise. She wanted to do it the wrong way. Ten years after God’s promise was yet unfulfilled they tried it their way.

Waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled can bring doubt and uncertainty. But when we try to do what God has promised on our own it only brings strife. Keep trusting and never give up on God’s promise.

Action Step: Don’t look to other ways to fulfill God’s promise in your life. Wait on him in patience and faith. He will do what he said he would do.

Lord Jesus, I am waiting on your promise to become my reality. I trust you will do it in your time. Keep me from looking to my own resources and means to do it myself. I want it to happen the way you said it will happen.
