Where in the Holy Bible does it say the husband is the spiritual leader in the family?
To my knowledge, there is no verse that says this in black and white. Most scholars infer this idea from certain texts. For instance, Adam is the one blamed for eating the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Romans 5:12-21).
Paul opens this section of Scripture by saying that sin came through one man, not Eve, the woman. Even though she was the first to eat and the one who was deceived, Adam received the blame (Romans 5:12, 14).
In Ephesians 5:25-32, Paul speaks to husbands as those who sacrificially love their wives. They give everything for their wives. Paul describes the role of the husband in the same way he describes the role of Christ and the church. Christ is the head of the church (Colossians 1:18). Scholars infer that since Christ is the head of his body, the church, so also the husband is head of the household.
Now it’s important to realize that although the husband is the leader and head of his household, the Bible places high demands on him as leader. He must lead like Christ leads the church. Sacrificial love is a must. He must not be harsh with his wife (Colossians 3:19).
He has a responsibility to treat her as Christ treats the church (Ephesians 5:26-28). While he owns the responsibility of being the leader in the home, he must be a leader like Christ. The responsibility even to him is a heavy one. The kind of man the Bible talks about is the kind of man a wife can respect and submit to when he is in submission to Christ.
