Crushing the Son

March 22 | Isaiah 53:10

“Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.” (Isaiah 53:10, ESV)

When Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, he asked the Father if there was any other way. But he accepted the Father’s will. Gethsemane in Aramaic means, “the winepress.” Jesus would be crushed like grapes to produce the sweet wine of God’s deliverance.

Isaiah saw this 700 years before Jesus was born. He prophesied about the Lord’s will to crash the suffering servant. And it benefited each of us who trust in him. When Jesus was on the cross, he was looking forward to his inheritance.

His inheritance wasn’t a fancy tomb. It was you and me given a place in God’s kingdom and family. Jesus knew that every drop of blood, strained ligament, and nail-pierced appendage got him closer to seeing you in his family.

Jesus drank the full cup of God’s wrath to the dregs. He was the sin offering for your transgressions. But he looked forward to the day you accepted his sacrifice on your behalf. He suffered back then for the great joy of seeing you for eternity.

Action Step: Thank Jesus that you are part of his inheritance. All of his suffering has paid off. He has paid for your invitation to his table at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Give him a sacrifice of praise in your blessings and your trials.

Precious Jesus, you paved the way with your suffering, with the crushing of your body and soul on the cross, so I could sit at your table. I feast on your wisdom and teaching. I want to follow your commandments and teaching, to sit at your feet.
