Crucify Your Flesh

March 15 | Galatians 5:24-25

“And those who belong to Christ crucified the flesh with its passions and cravings. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:24–25)

The Roman Empire used crucifixion to squash insurrection and any threat to its rule. It happened a lot in Palestine. Every Jew was familiar with the practice. Jesus understood what was waiting for him.

Paul uses the strongest language he knows for getting rid of our flesh. Our desires and passions must fall under Jesus’ control. It can be a daily battle, but we must fight it with the power of the Holy Spirit. Our old desires continue to tempt us.

But Jesus has freed you from blindly following them. You have a choice every time you are tempted. You can give in to these desires, or you can remind them you are dead to sin. They have no power over you anymore.

It’s worth the fight. We please Jesus and glorify him when we abstain from temptations. Instead of focusing on your temptations and past desires, focus on your desire to serve Jesus and be in his presence.

Action Step: Kick your old desires to the curb. Fight temptation when it comes your way. You have a greater inheritance that delivers on all its promises. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the power to remain dead to sin and evil desires. Keep walking in the Spirit.

Holy Spirit, I need your power to say no to my old desires and temptations. Guard me from all the temptations that attack my weak spots. Give me wisdom and a plan of escape. I want to serve Jesus with all my heart.
