Working for Jesus

July 9 | Colossians 3:23-24

“Whatever you do, work from the soul, as to the Lord and not people, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance – serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23–24)

As you look back at your work career so far have you had a job you loved? Maybe you are loving your job right now. But most people do not like their job. It’s hard to find the job that fits you, that you can enjoy for a lifetime because it’s something you love to do.

The Bible doesn’t have such concerns. We are called to have a godly work ethic no matter what job we are doing. When speaking to slaves in the Roman Empire, Paul tells them to work for the Lord instead of for people. When we work for people we could be mistreated, and that makes us not want to work.

Instead, everything you do, you do it to the Lord. He is the only one you are concerned to please. Serve Jesus and don’t worry about the person you can see in front of you. If you are working for Jesus you have no trouble working hard and producing a good product.

After all, you will receive your reward from Jesus. Making money to live in this life is necessary, but the inheritance Jesus has stored up for you is out of this world.

Action Step: Challenge yourself to see Jesus as your employer. When you work for Jesus you have a great work ethic. You want to please the Lord. When you are having a rough work day, think of Jesus’ reward and inheritance stored up for you.

Jesus, I need your strength to get through today. My employer is not fond of me. Help me to serve my employer the way you want me to. I am looking forward to your return and your inheritance for me.
