December 6 | 1 Timothy 6:10
“For a root of all kinds of evil is the love of money, which many desire that
has led astray from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”
(1 Timothy 6:10)
Many today who have the wrong priorities. Even among Christians, the desire for material wealth is too strong. Material wealth in and of itself is not bad. Some use it to further God’s Kingdom. I was weary of talking about money until the end of my first pastoral interview with a church. It wasn’t about leaving a bad impression. I felt money was the last thing we should address. I waited for them to do it.
I was blessed with people who addressed it toward the end of the interview. Paul brings up the love of money because it has come between some people’s faith and commitment to Christ. He says some have sadly left the ministry because of a love of money.
He did not say money is a root of all evil. He said the love of money is a root of evil. Money in itself is neither good nor bad. It is not innately immoral to have or use money. A person can’t survive in this world without it.
It’s about your attitude toward money. Do you seek it to take care of yourself, your family, and those in need? Or do you seek money because you want to live a lavish lifestyle?
Action Step: What is your attitude and heart toward money? Looking at your bank statements may help you see whether your heart matches your actions.
Jesus, thank You for everything you have entrusted to me. I want my heart toward money to be right, to please You. Help me make my heart and actions line up in my finances.
