Servant of the Lord

December 16 | Luke 1:37-38

Daily Bread

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.” (Luke 1:37–38)

Faith does not ignore your questions. Often times it asks questions of the Lord. But sometimes His answers lead to more. Faith accepts that God’s ways are higher than yours. It trusts in the One who has all the answers.

Mary was going about your day when she came face-to-face with Gabriel, the angel. Gabriel proclaimed to her that she was favored of the Lord, the mother of the Messiah. But because she was a virgin she asked by faith, “How can this be?” She wanted to understand God’s ways.

Gabriel’s answer baffled her. It baffles us today. Something about the Holy Spirit overshadowing her? That’s when her faith kicked in. She didn’t have to understand everything. The Lord knew what He was doing. Use the angel’s statement, “Nothing is impossible with God” to build your faith. That may have given Mary the courage to trust when she didn’t understand. She committed herself to the Lord’s purposes for her.

This Christmas can be a time of faith for you. What are you facing you don’t understand? You don’t know how God will make it all work. But you trust He will. Like Mary you can say, “Let it be to me as you have said. I am a servant of the Lord.”

Action Step: Seek to understand the Lord’s ways. But trust He knows what He’s doing even when you don’t. Take the next step forward and let the Lord do the rest.

Jesus, I trust You. I look to You when I don’t know what to do. Guide me through this season of my life. Show me what You want me to do next. Lead me, and I will follow. I turn this situation over to You.
