Seasoned Speech

“Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making good use of the time. Let your speech be seasoned with salt, always gracious, so that you may know how you ought to answer one another.” (Colossians 4:5–6)

How do you act with people who aren’t Christians? Most of them aren’t out to get you. What if you run into an atheist or someone who is hostile toward your faith? It gets a little harder to know how to deal with that situation and honor Jesus.

Paul gives great counsel on how to handle outsiders, non-Christians. You must have wisdom. Much of that requires you listen to the Spirit, knowing when to speak and when to be silent. Don’t waste time on an unbeliever who is only interested in baiting and trolling you.

The time is short before the end times and God’s judgment. You must take advantage of every moment you have to show people the love of Jesus and the power of God. When you do speak about Jesus, do it with grace. The Holy Spirit guides you in how to respond to each person.

You want to season your speech with salt. Salt preserves a godly perspective, provides a new way to look at things, and shares godly values. The world isn’t used to hearing a different perspective. They will see the Spirit working through you.

Action Step: Step out in faith and listen to the Spirit when He directs you to someone. Share your faith with a genuine story of how Jesus changed your life. Allow the Spirit to guide your conversation.

Holy Spirit, please show me people who need to hear about Jesus. Give me the words to speak. Help me to be gracious and genuine. Minister through me to those in darkness and bring them into Your light.
