Are the two ‘lifes’ mentioned in John 5:26 the same?
Yes, this is the resurrection life that God gives to everyone who believes in his Son Jesus. Throughout the passage Jesus is comparing himself to the Father and talking about how he is the same substance as the Father, part of the Trinity.
This is one of the things that will end him up on the cross. He was continually making claims to his divinity. He talks about how his authority is given to him by the Father. No one knows the Father except the Son and no one knows the Son except the Father. All of this language shows that Jesus is like the Father.
Jesus also has the same kind of life that the Father has. Although in this verse the emphasis is on the Father granting life to the Son. Jesus receives this eternal, resurrection life from the Father, and he has raised to life on the third day.
It is not just a resurrection life for that moment, in which he will die again, like Lazarus and all who were raised to life before him. The resurrection life of Jesus lasts forever. The saints will be raised at the returning of Christ from the grave and those who are living, and when they are raised, they will never die again.
The eternal and resurrection life that God gives is unlike the physical life we have on this earth, the ability to move and have our being. His life is an abiding and eternal one.
