April 6 | Daniel 1:8

“But Daniel set in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine he drank. So he asked the leader of the eunuchs that he not defile himself.” (Daniel 1:8)

Are you the kind of person who follows pre-made decisions no matter the outcomes? Some people adjust as the situation unfolds. Others stick with their decisions no matter the outcome. When I was a teenager, I made plans to withstand temptation when I dated. The covenant I made with myself was to follow them to the letter.

Daniel was that person. He refused to let situations change his mind. It wasn’t just an iron will. The Lord was helping him in this foreign land. He had high standards. Theories about the king’s food and drink fill the space of the Bible not explaining why Daniel thought he would defile himself by eating it.

Perhaps God wanted to prove a point with Daniel. The Babylonians probably thought you had to eat these things to stay healthy and strong. Daniel knew you only need God to give you your strength. He refused to give in, and God blessed him for it.

You face many voices throughout your day. Most of them are how the world thinks everything works. But you know God’s wisdom is better. You have opportunities like Daniel to show the world that godly wisdom is better than their wisdom.

Action Step: Read your Bible and let the Holy Spirit teach you God’s wisdom and ways. Offer a different perspective and wisdom to your coworkers, family, and friends.

Lord Jesus, help me walk in Your wisdom today. Show me how to honor You and exalt You at work, school, family gatherings, and to anyone I meet. I want to do what You have for me to do. I resolved to follow Your ways and wisdom.
