Remembering Your First Love

June 20 | Revelation 2:7

“The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the victor, i will give to him to eat from the tree of life, which is in God’s paradise.” (Revelation 2:7)

The longer you are in a relationship the easier it is to put space between you and your love. You get into the routine of the relationship. The next thing you know you’re so far apart you can’t remember what drew you together.

Many of us mature in our relationship with Jesus, thinking that means doing all the right things. But true maturity in Christ means we are more passionate about him now than when we first became Christians.

The church in Ephesus began focusing on works instead of relationship. They forgot their first love, Jesus. They were doing all the right things but the power in their devotion was swallowed up by works. Jesus needs to be the center of everything you do.

Jesus is the Vine and we are the branches. Without him we can do nothing. So what if that’s you? What if you have lost your first love? It’s not too late for you. You can still overcome the perilous place you are in.

And when you overcome Jesus gives you eternal life from the tree of life that was in the garden of Eden. Renew your relationship with Jesus and he makes it a never ending relationship.

Action Step: Go back to the beginning of when you met Jesus for the first time. Reignite your passion for him. Turn from the empty works you do now and you what you did at first.

Precious Jesus, I’ve been working for you but feel so empty inside. Fill me with your Spirit and give me the light and life I knew at first. I’m coming back to you. Remind me of who you are and what it’s like to live in your embrace.
