May 24 | Acts 4:12
“But Peter and the apostles answered, saying, “We must obey God rather than people.” (Acts 5:29)
We have a lot of people in our culture today give up on Jesus when the going gets tough. They are only interested in following Jesus until things get hard, and then they are ready to try something else.
But we must not serve Jesus only in the good times. To truly follow Jesus, to consider yourself. His disciple, you must also follow Him in the hard times. In fact, following Jesus in the hard times is much more rewarding.
Jesus walks with us through the valleys. He blesses us with His presence in those times. But even if he doesn’t, a true disciple of Jesus continues to follow Him and not give in to the outside pressures that challenge our faith and relationship with Jesus.
Peter and John faced political dangers to continue to follow Jesus, but they also faced danger of losing their lives. Instead of giving in, they declared open-throated, “We must obey God rather than men.”
What’s your price? They say every person has their price, the point of no return they decide to give in and take the opt out price they are offered. Are you in it for the long haul? Are you willing to suffer with Jesus even unto death?
Like Peter and John, you must to be thick-skinned in the face of threats and persecution. No matter what, you are sticking with Jesus. They can threaten you, your family, your resources, and anything else they want to take away from you. But they can’t take Jesus from you.
Action Step: Commit right now to staying with Jesus no matter what trials and dangers you face because of your commitment. When you make commitments now, when trials and persecutions come (and they will), your commitment will already be solidified and you can keep your promise to Jesus.
Jesus, I commit myself, my life, body, and resources fully to you. I know they are in good hands.
