Day 4: Prayer Focus: Pouring Out Of the Spirit | Acts 2:17
““‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” (Acts 2:17)
What would it look like if everyone who professes to be a Christian spoke and acted out of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit? Evangelists talk about if each Christian would reach just one person, the world would be Christianized. And yet, so many Christians have an estranged relationship with the Holy Spirit.
They can understand God the Father as a father figure. They see Jesus in bodily form. But they have a hard time conceiving of the Holy Spirit, let alone having conversations with Him and allowing Him to minister through them. All this is after Jesus initiated the new covenant, which Peter quotes from here.
In Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came upon kings, priests, and prophets. It was rare to see the Holy Spirit come upon others. The promise of the new covenant broke that wide open. Even servants would experience the pouring out of God’s Spirit.
No longer would the Holy Spirit only minister through a select part of the population. He is breaking out among the masses, and now He doesn’t just come on us to minister through us. He dwells in us! We carry the power of the Holy Spirit everywhere we go.
I wonder if Joel 2:28-29 was one passage Jesus opened the disciples’ minds to when He expounded on how the whole testament foreshadowed and look forward to His coming (Luke 24:27). The Holy Spirit makes so much available to us, but many Christians don’t realize it or tap into His power.
We need Jesus to pour out the Holy Spirit on us again. The Church must be ready for what is coming in the end times. We need revival, but we also need renewal in the Spirit. If we could see just a fraction of the Church realizing just a part of the new covenant Jesus died to initiate, we would see more revival than we’ve ever seen before.
As you pray today for the Holy Spirit to be poured out on our church, think about the implications of that prayer. Let it start with you. How would your life be different if you yielded yourself more to the Holy Spirit? What could Jesus do through you?
