Look Up and Live

July 28 | Numbers 21:8-9; John 3:14-15

“And the Lord said to Moses, “Make for yourself a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and it will happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it will live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole, and it happened that if a serpent bit a person would look at the bronze serpent he would live.” (Numbers 21:8–9)

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus, the Son of Man must be lifted up, with the result that everyone who believes in him has eternal life.” (John 3:14–15)

The Israelites in the wilderness complained many times. After God provided manna for food they complained about it, the location, and everything else. In His anger God sent fiery serpents to bite and kill them.

When death was at their door they apologized to Moses and asked him to pray for them. God instructed Moses to make a bronze serpent resembling the fiery serpents. He promised that anyone who looked up on the bronze serpent when bitten by fiery serpents would live.

Despite His anger God provided a way for healing. When the people repented He healed them. The Israelites learned to trust in the Lord for healing. Later in the Gospels Jesus came and promised eternal life.

Just as when Moses made the bronze serpent so the Israelites could live Jesus promised that anyone who looks to him will live forever. In your sickness and disorder, look up to Jesus from whom your help comes. And you will be healed.
