Foot of the Cross

April 3 | John 19:25

“Now standing by Jesus’s Cross were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” (John 19:25)

Our society emphasizes recognition and acknowledgment. We’re so bad at having to do it that kids get trophies for anticipation. Even if they didn’t do anything else noteworthy, at least they showed up.

John points out these women at the foot of the Cross because they cared so much for Jesus. They were there until the bitter end. His mother Mary saw in her son something different hanging on that tree. These women watched the brutality of a horrific crucifixion and stayed at the foot of the Cross. This was more than participation. It was love.

You don’t get a participation trophy for being a Christian. Committing to follow Jesus no matter what is just the beginning. He wants to do a lot of work in your heart and character. He wants to make you like Him, and that is a long, rough road. It takes time and effort on yours and the Holy Spirit’s parts.

It all begins at the foot of the Cross. Only under the Cross do we receive Jesus for who He is, the sacrifice He made for us. That’s where we see the beauty, blood, and water mingled together, streaking down the body given for us.

Action Step: Live the crucified life to Christ alone. As He sacrificed for you, live every moment in sacrifice to Him. Always offer yourself in everything you think, say, and do.

Precious Jesus, You gave Your life to give me life. What can I do to show my gratitude and love for you today? I want to pour my offering and worship out to You. I want to please you and make you smile.
