Citizens of Heaven

July 4 | Philippians 3:20-21

“For your citizenship exists in heaven, from which we are eagerly awaiting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our humble body to be similar and outward appearance to his glorious body according to the power that enables him to subject all things to himself.” (Philippians 3:20–21)

Many citizens enjoy a number of benefits from their citizenship. As we celebrate Independence Day in America we celebrate how we have made a nation and enjoy the benefits of our freedom. We consider America the greatest nation on earth because of the freedoms we enjoy.

But there is another kingdom where freedom reigns. Christians belong first and foremost to the kingdom of heaven. You enjoy eternal benefits from our Savior Jesus Christ. He died to set you free from sin and death.

Sometimes we forget we are citizens of heaven first and American citizens second. Don’t forget that this world is passing away. But heaven is forever. We are waiting for Jesus to return to take us home, to our true home.

While you wait for him he transforms you into his likeness. There will be a day when your perishable body will put on immortality in Christ. But he is starting that transformation now in your character and spirit.

Action Step: Look forward to the hope of your salvation, the return of Christ to take you into heaven eternally. Live today for his glory as he transforms you into his image. This world is not your home and your greater citizenship is in heaven. Be thankful for them both.

Lord Jesus, I can’t wait for you to return for me. But I’m also thankful you’re transforming me even now. Help me to keep the faith in this great hope until you arrive. Thank you for my citizenship in heaven. I cherish it and long for your return.
