Beloved Friendship

July 13 | 1 Samuel 18:1

“And as he finished speaking to Saul, Jonathan’s soul was tied together to David’s soul, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:1)

Everyone has a best friend. Some people say they have many “best friends.” Of course, that doesn’t make any sense. You can only have one “best” friend. And if anyone needed a best friend, David did. Before he became king he was hunted by Saul, and his life was constantly in danger.

God gave David a special gift, a friend unlike anyone he would ever have. Ironically, it was King Saul’s son. Jonathan and David were closer than brothers. Jonathan always placed David’s needs about his own. And that is a true friend.

His own father wanted to kill him on several occasions because he was so close to David. He cared more about David than himself. It’s hard to find a friend willing to risk his own neck to save yours. This is a rare friendship.

If you don’t think you have a friend like that, you do. The Bible says there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). Jesus called his disciples friends instead of sermons. He is the Friend who is with you no matter what. And he is on your side.

Like Jonathan did for David, Jesus was willing to risk his own life for you. He died on the Cross to save you from sin and eternal destruction. You are blessed in God because of your Friend Jesus.

Action Step: Thank Jesus for his sacrifice for you. He gave everything to bring you eternal life. It’s good to have blessed friendships but your greatest friendship is with Jesus.

Jesus, thank you that you have found me and made me your friend. You gave up so much for me. I give my life to you for your service. Do what you will in and through me.
